Cranberrry Relish Kind of Life!

Just finished making cranberry relish! It is the one thing I am passionate about at the holidays! And since my hubby purchased a top notch grinder it is super easy to make!

I love ALL the ingredients and when all put together they blend their fragrances and their flavors into a dish that screams "HAPPY HOLIDAYS"! How can one even think of turkey without cranberry relish!

It was a big deal to make cranberry relish when I was a kid. We all wanted a turn operating the grinder wheel that mom screwed onto the edge of the table! As the Cranberries, apples and oranges went from whole or chunks into the coarse, juicy layers into the bowl we could hardly wait to add the sugar to tame the tart "just enough" but not too much! Often the pecans that we chopped into the dish came from our tree and the time spent freeing the nutmeats from their shells only added to the fun!

And as I made this years relish minus kids or parents I couldn't help but think how much like life Cranberry relish is! Each day adds its own ingredient ground into our lives by time and trial. The sweetness of love and the little moments that make us catch our breath in joy! The tears that are cried from the sour sorrows we endure; The everyday moments that give our days form and substance but are often overlooked and taken for granted; all blend in to make our cranberry relish life!

At this time of year I like to think we can stop a moment and take in all those flavors. We can breathe deeply of the citrusey tartness and the undertones of sweetness and know that life is worth it all!

So I will hug my grandkids and find some little kindness to give to those still clinging to life after many years of living. I hope I can sit down and share a few stories with my kids and let it ALL blend together into memories to relish...later as they grind crimson berries into holiday relish!!
